Cpt. Alice Mottram's Diary #5: Hit the Gas

Zombie Kill Count: 6

I found a walkie-talkie in Bashnya - which I need to now refer to as Home Base - and made contact with one Serverus Ecru, the Noble Ones leader and ex-Archaeologist. He had traveled down to Green Mountain and when he heard me on the radio, he messaged back to say he would come back up to meet me. Serverus seems ok, but a hopeful man and that worries me. He calls the Noble Ones his family and I sadly have become a more cynical bitch lately. The squad were my family and look how that turned out, nearly got bitten three times trying to save some of them and the fools just went into a panic anyways.

I had been crawling around the main base when I came face to face with a zombie. I hadn't seen one for many days, so it took me a few seconds to respond, enough for it to cut me up a bit. Luckily, no bite and no signs of infection. I ran up on top of a gas cylinder and shot her, which attracted the attention of three more. I dispatched them the same way. For my own amusement, I've started a zombie kill count. It's the kind of thing my brother would have done.

Met up with Serverus. Had a nice campfire in the lobby, which blinded me a while. I may have hinted too much about what may or may not be going on with my eyes, but I can't do anything about that now. Serverus has about ten people with him, only met one other so far. I know him only as Devious at the moment, a comforting name. We went to the Airfield as we are all a little low on food. Encountered another zombie, I put three bullets into it then Devious got the kill shot (but that one totally counts as mine!). Didn't find much. They had to go back to the main base, so I said I would do a food haul mission and come back with supplies. I'm too twitchy around people it seems, I need some breathing space after a few hours.

So I'm on the Airfield, let's hope no military zombies spawn. I haven't got a lot of ammo left. Play it safe.

P.S: I found a harmonica on my travels, I don't think I mentioned that. They liked me playing it over the campfire, made us all pretty nostalgic.

Cpt. Alice Mottram's Diary #4: Rail Tracks

I searched all round that town, fumbling around on my belly in broad daylight. It was 8am I think, judging by the bloody morning chorus. It felt like the very first morning we see as infants, which soon falls out of our fragile memories: blurs of yellow, blue and pink. I forgot sunlight wasn't yellow. Anyway, I looked at both entrances into the town and neither possessed a road sign. The sky was heavy with clouds, but I had just enough to know which way was East. So I ran that way.

That land opened out once again into farmland, big soggy bales of hay were littering the fields long after they should have been in. I stayed on the main road despite the risks. I needed to find water, as I had drunk the last of my Pepsi and Sprites the previous day. Food wasn't much of a problem, hell I would have cooked up a vegetable stew if I had had a pot. I came across large patches of concrete, the foundations for houses never built. I passed a few barns and one large complex, which looked more military than agriculture, but being so far North it was hard to tell.

I was struck by the need to turn South. If I kept going East I would just keep running into more farmland, the faint map in my memory flashed big patches of white and green behind my eyes. The only thing I would eventually run into was the sea and it would be a long trek back. So I turned South. I saw a deer yesterday, but there were no boars or cows in those fields.

I came suddenly upon set of railway tracks. I was struck dumb by the oddity of them. I had seen many big roads since the untitled town, but no tracks. It made me dizzy and I had to sit down for a while and recall the map I had studied on the plane over to Russia many months ago. There were two main train tracks, one going along the coast and one going along the North, which must have been that one. Still a little confused just how I had managed to find it, I spied a large woody hill to my left. I knew there were only two main hills this far North and South of the railway: Bashnya and Devil's Castle. I knew I had to take a chance. So I went for the hill.

I circled around the base until I found a road. I remember the map showed a supply road. I knew it would be Bashnya if it had a well and if there wasn't a castle. I crawled up to the top of the hill where the trees broke away and revealed a tiny complex. It looked very much like an abandoned military encampment, a watch-tower of sorts for the valleys surrounding it. There were piles of logs too.

I tip-toed around the front of the buildings, hoping - no, begging - to see the well. If I saw the well, it would mean I was at Bashyna, my journey was over.....and there was a well. I dove into the buildings, which were obviously inhabited as there were fresh wrappers, the newish smell of deodorant and various belongings tucked under beds.

I'm here. I made it. This is Bashnya.

Cpt. Alice Mottram's Diary #3: Roads to Nowhere

I started out on my long journey, running northwards through dense forests and up mountains. It has been raining constantly, but I seem to be doing well. Only had to stop to eat and drink once, my levels are high and it was only after a long time that I needed to feed my body. I ran for what seemed like hours, navigating my way. Trees shrouded in nothing but shadow and the stench of sap watched over me, as I passed through the night. But, I must have gone too far. I had run for over half an hour when the woods finally broke and rolling hills stretched out before me, vast, smooth and barren. All the grass, the life, seemed to come to a halt. There was a visible line in the terrain, like a child had dragged a dark crayon across the hillside. I stepped out onto it and nothing happened, but I could see - somehow my eyes continue to evolve - for miles and miles there was nothing but barren land, as smooth as a baby's thigh. I couldn't understand it and I grew afraid.

I ran back to the woods and decided to find out where I could possibly be. I had no map or compass, the clouds smothered the stars and there were no roads to be seen. I decided I must have run too far north, so I turned south-east and continue that way, begging for a road to appear.

It had been another twenty-minutes before I found a main road. At first I followed it back the way I had just come, hoping that maybe the road would continue on through the barren landscape and lead me to civilization. It did not. It is perhaps the most inexpiable thing I have ever seen and that I know will haunt me for many nights. The road stopped. The child's line cut it in half. Even the road didn't want to continue into that wasteland. I turned and bolted back down the road, which seemed endless. I began to wonder if I had died in my sleep and whether I was now in some level of Hell, though for what reason I do not know. I've never killed anyone, except those two zombies and they were already dead.

Eventually, the road did lead me into a town. I have yet to discover the name of it, there are no road signs or power cables or railways to go by. I crawled along the road for some time, trying to find a sign, but finding none I have clambered into a tree in the middle of a field. I have little knowledge of the North, which is where I undoubtedly am, I suspect the town to be Krasnoe or Kamensk. If my calculations are right, I'll head south in the morning, if I cannot find a road sign. After being so long in the wilderness, the little town seems alien and threatening. I hope I live to see Bashnya.

Cpt. Alice Mottram's Diary #2:

Left with one 1 bullet worth a damn (CR75) in a crisis, I went to find Balota. I went down to the main road by Kamenka, that's when I found out just how wide I went. I had taken a big loop over the hills about Chernogorsk and Chapaevsk, didn't want to find myself in another situation like Electro. I came out of the countryside, popped into military base and well, you already know what happened there. So I dove back into the hills, looping over Kamenka, Komorovo and Balota itself. It makes me smile to see the wildlife hasn't suffered too much. On my way over Cherno I saw a gorgeous stag and on my way to Balota post-Kamenka I saw a boar and another stag. Didn't shoot them, hell call me an animal lover if you like but I had no axe for firewood anyway. That's my top priority now: get me some sort of Axe. Before he died, I saw my buddy Rory take out ten zombies with a Fire Axe, looked like a good weapon in a tight spot.

Anyway, I dropped down onto the Balota airstrip yesterday and didn't leave until this morning (at least, I think it is morning). Stayed crouched under the damn ATC stairs until I could be sure it was save. Hoped to meet some fellow fleshies, but no luck. Found myself a Makarov + ammo, as well as a whole load of other ammo I don't even know what to do with. I have three guns, all with bullets, a crowbar which would be next to useless in close quarters. I have so many pockets I couldn't find my screwdriver the other day. Got enough food, water, supplies for about two other people. Which got me thinking, I need some companions. I'm friendly, I won't shoot anyone unless they shoot first, but that won't mean I'm going to give you a gun the moment you crawl up next to me and start whispering sweet nothings in my ear. I can give you food and could get you some clothes too if you are hard done for those. If anyone is looking for a trained soldier in their group, I can only say I can take care of myself and I am beginning to know those zombies pretty well. Mottram, out.

Cpt. Alice Mottram's Diary #1:

I feel I've been traveling for many nights, yet I cannot tell where each night begins and ends, it gets so dark so quickly here. You fall asleep in darkness and wake up to it, that's just how it is. It is comforting though. I find if you are sneaking - your arse dragging along the concrete or grass - and if it is night, the zombies have a harder time of finding you. Three days ago I was in Electro. Came out of a police station to find a zombie to my left and one to my right, both about 100 yards way, maybe less. Both facing away thank god. I got on my belly and crawled to the other side of the road. They never looked in my direction. Rule 1 of Night Survival: If they can't see you, you may live.

I headed for Balota Airfield, I had a CR75 (15 shots) and a CR257
Carbine (26 shots, but only shot one bullet at a time before a reload). I stayed to the hills and forests, the undead seem to like the towns and with no one else stirring, I could run across the countryside before the buggers even stumbled into my radius. Overshot, found myself in the military base above Kamenka. Shot my first two zombies after I came out behind a tree and the fucking first one was drooling right there! Didn't even hear him. Rule 2: Just cause you can't hear them, doesn't mean they aren't there. I looted the place after dispatching them and shitting myself waiting for more. Traded in Carbine for SKS, got myself some military clothes (I had to ditch mine when my commander tried to eat me). Then I went on to Balota.......
