Just out of curiosity, does anyone ever actually do 400 words on the essays in the staff apps? Like are there any current staff who didn't do it. I'm not asking for names, I'm just curious if it IS possible.

The best applications use close to or at that 400 word cut off. Many actually take the time to write these essays and they bolster applications significantly. It is possible to get by with a poor and/or shorter essay although it makes it MUCH harder to get staff as taking the time to write lets us understand you better and shows that you actually care enough. Hope this helps!
